Garcia highlighted the unique contributions of Pope Francis, the first Jesuit pope, noting his ability to challenge wealth and power.

In a follow-up message in Spanish, posted on the same day, Rep. Garcia continued to express her condolences, saying, "Me uno a millones de personas en todo el mundo en luto por la partida del Papa Francisco." She similarly praised his papacy for its notable qualities including compassion and moral clarity, and reiterated his role as a reformative figure.

Later, Rep. Garcia addressed a recent shooting involving law enforcement personnel, stating, "I’m keeping Deputy Constable Sheila Jones and all those affected by today’s shooting in my prayers." She acknowledged the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in her community.

Sylvia Garcia's professional and educational background includes a BA from Texas Woman's University and a JD from Texas Southern University. She has been a member of Congress since 2019 and previously served in the Texas Senate. Garcia, born in 1950 in San Diego, Texas, now resides in Houston.
