Rep. Sylvia Garcia, currently serving as the representative for Texas’ 29th District in the U.S. Congress, made several public statements on social media concerning issues close to her work and commitments. Garcia, who took over from Gene Green in 2019, shared thoughts on fiscal responsibility, health care, and public education through her official account.
On April 16, 2025, Garcia commented on her participation in the reopening of the City Controller’s lobby in Houston. She expressed pride in the event, highlighting her past experience in a similar role. Garcia noted the importance of the fiscal watchdog role, stating, "Today I joined City Controller @CGHollins for the unveiling of the new City Controller’s lobby. As a former city controller myself, I’m proud to see the office thriving and know that Houston’s fiscal watchdog is hard at work protecting taxpayer dollars and serving our city."
On the following day, April 17, 2025, Garcia acknowledged #MedicaidMattersDayofAction, underscoring the program's significance in supporting millions. Her tweet emphasized her ongoing efforts to safeguard Medicaid, emphasizing, "Today is #MedicaidMattersDayofAction, a reminder that millions of families, children, seniors, and people with disabilities rely on Medicaid for the care they need. I’m fighting to protect this lifeline and ensure no one in our community is left behind."
Later, on the same day, Garcia addressed education funding, critiquing school voucher initiatives in Texas. She described the initiatives as detrimental to public education, asserting, "I’ve fought these voucher scams before. I’m not new to this fight. They funnel money from our neighborhood public schools and leave behind the kids who need the most help. @GregAbbott_TX can call it ‘choice,’ but we know better. This is about defunding public education."
Adding context to these messages, Garcia holds a long-standing career dedicated to public service. Born in San Diego, Texas, in 1950, and having an academic background from Texas Woman’s University and Texas Southern University, she has served both in the Texas Senate and the U.S. Congress. She currently resides in Houston.
