Later that day, Garcia addressed calls to abolish the Department of Education by underscoring its foundational role in ensuring educational equity across states: "Let’s be clear: the Department of Education exists because states wouldn’t fund poor schools, wouldn’t protect kids with disabilities, wouldn’t follow civil rights law, especially in the South. Anyone calling to abolish it is calling to turn back the clock—and we can’t let that."
