Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a current member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas' 29th District, uses her social media platform to address issues related to justice, civil rights, and voting accessibility. On April 10, 2025, Garcia shared her admiration for acclaimed civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, as well as her concerns regarding a new legislative bill affecting voter access.
On the occasion of Dolores Huerta’s 95th birthday, Rep. Sylvia Garcia emphasized her gratitude towards Huerta's legacy. Garcia stated, "I stand on the shoulders of giants–and @DoloresHuerta is one of them." She used the birthday to announce her intention to reintroduce a resolution to recognize April 10th as national Dolores Huerta Day. Garcia added that Huerta's efforts in advocating for justice, dignity, and workers' rights have significantly influenced her career and contributions to the nation.
Garcia expressed her opposition to the SAVE Act, passed by Republicans, calling it a guise under the name of election security. According to Garcia, "The SAVE Act Republicans just passed isn’t about election security." She criticized it as a measure of voter suppression that could prevent numerous Texans from casting their votes, noting that noncitizens are already barred from voting in federal elections.
Further commenting on the implications of the SAVE Act, Garcia highlighted the act’s potential to inhibit Texans from registering to vote by mail. She articulates that "It would also prevent Texans from registering to vote by mail, further restricting access for the most vulnerable." Garcia viewed such actions as an attempt by Republicans to undermine democracy by making the voting process more difficult for many Americans.
Rep. Sylvia Garcia has been serving Texas' 29th district since replacing Gene Green in 2019. Her prior experience includes service in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Garcia, born in San Diego, Texas in 1950, lives in Houston and holds degrees from Texas Woman's University and Texas Southern University.
