Washington DC - Congressman Wesley Hunt, along with bipartisan support, has introduced a bill aimed at reducing the backlog of untested DNA evidence in criminal investigations, particularly in cases of rape and sexual assault. The bill, known as the Debbie Smith Act, has passed the Judiciary Committee for mark-up.
The Debbie Smith Act, which has already successfully matched nearly 200,000 DNA cases since its inception in 2005, provides federal grants to states to help expedite the testing of biological material that may contain DNA. By reauthorizing this act, Congress aims to continue supporting law enforcement agencies and providing justice to victims of sexual assault and homicide.
"It is time to put an end to the backlog of untested and unanalyzed DNA evidence and hold perpetrators accountable. I am honored to co-lead this effort," said Congressman Wesley Hunt.
The introduction of this bipartisan bill marks a significant step forward in addressing the pressing issue of DNA testing backlog. With the support of both parties, it is hoped that the bill will swiftly move through the legislative process and become law, enabling law enforcement agencies across the country to expedite the analysis of DNA evidence and bring perpetrators to justice.
