WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) announces $1,220,799.46 in federal funding to the City of Houston for repairs as a result of Hurricane Harvey.
“I am proud to announce the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Federal grant for the State of Texas for Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts authorized under the Robert T. Stafford Act,” said Congresswoman Garcia. “Houston suffered high winds and unprecedented rainfall causing four days of standing floodwater, sand, and silt, resulting in irreparable damage to homes, schools, and businesses during Hurricane Harvey 6 years ago. The damage cannot be undone, but reparations can be made. I have long advocated for federal funding to come to the City of Houston for Hurricane Harvey repairs because it shouldn’t have to take this long. and I’m glad to see it coming into effect today.”
“I also want to celebrate the work of my colleagues who have advocated for this assistance from the beginning. I look forward to further collaboration to continue helping those who have borne the brunt of hurricane damage,” concluded Congresswoman Garcia.
With this funding, Texas and the greater Houston area will be able to restore lift stations back to operable standards as well as emergency generators and fuel tanks, and other emergency preparation equipment. These funds will make large strides in not only disaster reparation, but also preparation and prevention.
