The Sunnyside Solar Project, a planned 240-acre solar farm to be installed on the site of a former landfill in the Sunnyside neighborhood, will be the largest urban solar farm in the nation once completed.
The solar farm is projected to be completed in 2022, according to a post on the Greater Houston Partnership’s website.
Including a 50-megawatt ballasted solar array capable of generating sufficient power for approximately 5,000 homes, the solar array is expected to replace the need for 120 million pounds of CO2 production in the process of normal power generation, according to the release.
Mayor Sylvester Turner said that Houston is looking to continue to be a leader in the energy industry by staying at the forefront of the transition to renewable energy sources, according to the post.
In addition to its function in producing power, the Sunnyside solar project will also provide educational opportunities to the local community.
