There were 41,117 African American students enrolled in Houston ISD schools in the 2022-23 school year, 4.6% less than the previous year, according to the Texas Education Agency.

Data showed that Houston ISD schools welcomed 189,934 students during the 2022-23 school year. Among them, African American students comprised 21.6% of the student body to be one of the most represented ethnicities in the district.

Houston ISD roughly covers schools within Harris County and has a main office in Houston.

Among the 272 schools in Houston ISD schools, Texas Connections Academy at Houston recorded the highest enrollment of African American students in the 2022-23 school year, with a total of 1,460 students.

Texas is found to be one of the least-educated states in the U.S. A study from WalletHub ranked Texas 41st out of 50 states in terms of the quality of the educational system and how successful students were.

More than 5.4 million students are enrolled in public schools across Texas. Nearly one million of them live in rural areas where options for local public schools are few and far between.
