(Houston, TX) — On Saturday, September 2, 2023, Congressman Al Green will join Councilmember Jeffrey L. Boney, public officials and local residents to present his personal funds in a symbolic check for $1,975.40. The funds will support the local street renaming in the Vicksburg Village of Shiloh subdivision in Missouri City. The street names that have been changed are Bedford Forrest Drive to Liberty Way Drive and Bedford Forrest Court to Liberty Way Court.

The renaming of these streets is a result of a community effort driven by residents to remove the name Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate general and first grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Congressman Al Green continues to support this effort and helped provide the funding needed by residents to pay the fees for the modification of the street names.

“I am proud to support the renaming of these streets in Missouri City and look forward to supporting future renamings. This is an important step in removing the symbols of hate and oppression from our community. The term ‘liberty’ is defined as ‘the quality or state of being free,’” Congressman Al Green stated. “Fort Bend County is known as one of the most diverse and inclusive counties in the nation, and local residents deserve to have street names that reflect their inalienable right to liberty as recognized in the Declaration of Independence. As a society we have a duty to remove representations of dishonor that represent the hateful ideologies of bigotry and invidious discrimination.”
