WASHINGTON, DC – On May 31, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia voted no on the Fiscal Responsibility Act
“I cannot in good conscience vote for the Fiscal Responsibility Act. While I want to avoid a default on our budget, I do not want it to come at the expense of everyday Americans. People suffering hardships who need food assistance would be subject to burdensome work requirements, my district will lose FEMA dollars we need in case of a disaster, and the IRS won’t be able to hire more help so my constituents will have to wait on their tax return payments to get processed. The wellbeing of people in my own district and nationwide should not be compromised because of extreme MAGA Republicans’ stubbornness to pass a clean debt ceiling increase. It is our job as public officials to serve our constituents to the best of our ability, regardless of the cost. For these reasons, I voted no,” concluded the Congresswoman.
Yesterday, the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 passed in the House of Representatives 314 -117 votes.
