A Donna resident, Roberto Segura Jr., has been sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for using a firearm in connection with drug trafficking activities. U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced the sentencing following Segura's guilty plea on October 1, 2024.
U.S. District Judge Drew B. Tipton imposed the sentence, which includes five years of supervised release after incarceration. The case stems from a search conducted on July 24, 2024, at Segura's residence where authorities found marijuana, over 400 grams of cocaine, body armor, and a firearm in his bedroom. Segura admitted to possessing the firearm for protection during his drug trafficking activities.
Segura will remain in custody until he is transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility.
The investigation was carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives along with the Alamo Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cahal P. McColgan prosecuted the case under the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program. This program is part of an initiative announced by Attorney General Merrick B. Garland in May 2021 aimed at reducing violent crime through community-focused strategies.
The PSN program emphasizes four principles: building trust within communities, supporting violence prevention organizations, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes to effectively reduce violent crime rather than merely increasing arrests or prosecutions.
