Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Receives Vice Ranking Member Of The Financial Services Committee Appointment For The 118th Congress

Washington, DC – Ranking Member Maxine Waters (CA-43) of the House Financial Services Committee announced Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia (TX-29) as Vice Ranking Member of the full committee for the 118th Congress. 

“I am honored to be appointed Vice Ranking Member of the Financial Services Committee. I will continue my work on expanding and improving financial literacy for not only Texans, but all Americans. And my commitment to maintain safe, stable, and reliable banking systems for all Americans, regardless of where they live, what language they speak, or their income level, remains. I am incredibly grateful to Ranking Member Waters (CA-43) as well as my colleagues that sit with me on the Financial Services Committee for this prestigious appointment,” said Congresswoman Garcia. 

“Congresswoman Garcia has been on our Committee since the 116th Congress and has been a fearless advocate on issues such as improving language access for mortgage borrowers and other housing issues,” said Ranking Member Waters. “I am pleased that Congresswoman Garcia was approved by our Committee’s Democratic caucus to hold this position this Congress, and I look forward to working with her as we continue to keep the priorities of our Members including housing, at the forefront of our work this Congress." 

The House Financial Services Committee has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to the economy, the banking system, housing, insurance, and securities and exchanges. Additionally, the Committee has jurisdiction over monetary policy, international finance, international monetary organizations, and efforts to combat terrorist financing.

Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2018, becoming the first Latina ever to represent the Texas 29th Congressional District. She is Vice Ranking Member of the House Financial Services Committee and a member of the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government.
