In the modern world, internet access is one of the most important factors to success.
Because of this, the City of Houston is making it a priority to provide affordable, easy access to internet for low-income households. Officials hope to achieve this with a new internet voucher program, funded by $624,960 of CARES Act funds. With the funds, 5,000 vouchers will be made available to applicants until Dec. 20. The vouchers are good for internet connectivity for one year.
“This pandemic has highlighted the importance of quality internet service particularly for those vulnerable populations who must stay at home to stay safe," Mayor Sylvester Turner said. "This program will provide a lifeline for citizens that have struggled through the pandemic without internet access and a way to stay informed, connected and safe during these challenging times.”
To qualify, residents must live in the City of Houston and have an address that is within reach of Comcast internet service. They must also disclose total household income and fit into key demographics.
