WASHINGTON, D.C. – On June 1, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, released the following statement celebrating the start of Pride Month. As a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, Congresswoman Garcia supports the Congressional Equality Caucus’ mission to promote equality for all people regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics.

“I want to wish a happy Pride Month to the LGBTQIA+ community in my district and across the country. Pride is a wonderful time of year to celebrate LGBTQIA+ people, history, and culture,” said Congresswoman Garcia. “This year, as I celebrate Pride with my community, I will also be thinking about the wave of anti-equality legislation that we have seen across the Texas legislature, and even in the House of Representatives. I joined the Congressional Equality Caucus because I believe LGBTQIA+ people deserve to live freely as their authentic selves and deserve full legal equality in the U.S. and around the world. As anti-equality extremists continue to attack the community, especially transgender or gender non-conforming people, I will continue to fight on behalf of the LGBTQIA+ community to enshrine equality into law.”

“I’m honored to celebrate Pride Month with Congresswoman Garcia whose membership in the Equality Caucus has contributed to the Caucus having the largest membership it has ever seen to date. As one of the Equality Caucus’ 194 members, Congresswoman Garcia actively uses her platform and leadership to advocate for the advancement of LGBTQIA+ people in her district and across the country,” said Equality Caucus Chair Mark Pocan (WI-02). “It is a tumultuous time for the LGBTQIA+ community, especially in states like Texas, where LGBTQIA+ people are being attacked persistently by the state legislature. Congresswoman Garcia continues to be a steadfast ally to the community and on the frontlines defending against attacks from anti-equality politicians in Congress who are trying to take away the rights of LGBTQIA+ people. I am grateful to have Congresswoman Garcia on the side of equality in this fight.”
