Troy Finner will become the next chief of police for the City of Houston, following a unanimous vote from City Council.

Finner was selected last week by Mayor Sylvester Turner as the successor to Art Acevedo, who will be assuming the role of Miami’s police chief. The move is a promotion from Finner's role as executive assistant chief.

Finner grew up in the Fifth Ward, graduating from James Madison High School. He then received his bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University his master’s degree from the University of Houston.

Councilwoman Abbie Kamin commended Finner on his promotion, writing on social media “Congratulations @troyfinner who has just been confirmed as Chief of @houstonpolice. As @HOUPublicSafety Chair, I look forward to working w/ you to protect the most vulnerable, just as you have for decades. Thank you for your willingness to step up & lead the men and women of HPD!”

Native Houston residents have expressed their support of Finner’s promotion.

Ronald Stribling said, “To see somebody from the neighborhood make it to that level, it’s great. I’m so happy for him. He’s a good guy, too.”

Heidi Flores, another Houstonite, lauded Finner for his dedication to the Fifth Ward: “He’s really caring, and really into family. He really cares about family and the community.”

Finner is set to assume his new leadership role on April 5.

“I never knew I had so much support in this city, and I don’t take it lightly,” Finner said. “The trust that I've built up, we're going to harness that and move our agency forward, working with everybody. I will not let you down."
