Port Houston has reached high levels of activity despite the global impact of COVID-19.
Last December, the port recorded 264,626 20-foot equivalent units (TEU) – 4% higher compared to the December 2019 record of 253,830 TEUs.
The port recorded an annual container volume of 2,989,347 TEUs in 2020, almost topping its record year of 2019 with 2,990,175 TEUs. Cargo shipping faced a worldwide slowdown from March until summer. But imports started to improve as the year ends.
"December marked the second-highest month ever for loaded imports, with 126,771 TEUs handled, a 26% jump over December 2019," Port Houston Executive Director Roger Guenther said in a Jan. 13 release. "We are proud to keep the supply chain moving and help move goods to consumers. People need the items that arrive through our docks, like medical supplies and food, as well as e-commerce goods for their home. Given the challenging 2020 we all had, we are grateful to our entire team for continuing to provide world-class service to our customers so Houstonians and others in the region get the essentials they need.”
Port Houston is the U.S. Gulf Coast's dominant container port and is the sixth-largest container port in the nation. It has been operating for more than 100 years and continues to handle more than two-thirds of containers in the U.S. Gulf Coast.
