Artists, musicians and venues have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Houston Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs (MOCA) has stepped in to provide some financial help.
The MOCA, working with the Houston Arts Alliance and Mid-America Arts Alliance, has given $5 million in CARES Act funding to 691 recipients. That includes 226 artists, 308 musicians, 121 arts and cultural organizations, and 36 music venues. The funding received will help support these artists and stimulate the economy.
"The City's commitment to music venues, musicians, cultural institutions and artists is part of a variety of supports like broadband access, rental assistance, and small business relief," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a release posted on the Mayor's website.
Those who received the money come from across the city, and most reported their artistic practice was their primary sources of income.
