University of Houston Track and Field freshman Zac Miller set a new school record in the men’s 1500-meter race at the J. Fred Duckett Twilight Invitational, according to an April 27 announcement.
The event marked a significant achievement for the program as Miller’s time of 3:43.02 surpassed Patrick Picciano’s previous record of 3:44.48, which had stood since May 1988. The performance highlights ongoing progress within the team as athletes continue to improve longstanding records.
Miller won the race at Rice University, with sophomore Remay Abraha finishing second and recording the third-fastest time in program history at 3:44.60. Other notable results included junior Cordell Nwokeji winning his fourth men’s shot put event this season with a mark of 19.03 meters, and freshman Zyon Alston securing victories in both the women’s 100-meter (11.54 seconds) and women’s 200-meter (23.76 seconds) races.
Additional performances saw freshman Saphina Stanley win the women’s triple jump with a personal best of 12.29 meters, while sophomore Stephanie Ume-Ezeoke finished second overall with her own best mark of 12.06 meters. Graduate Arianna Peroni cleared a personal best height of 4.05 meters to win the women’s pole vault, moving her up to fifth on Houston’s all-time list; junior Nicole Prall placed third with a clearance of 3.80 meters.
Sophomore Noah Hanson was runner-up in the men’s 110-meter hurdles (14.19 seconds), while sophomore Elijah Hernandez finished third in the men’s 400-meters with a personal best time of 47.65 seconds, and graduate Canaan Wharry took third place in men’s discus (54.73 meters).
Looking ahead, Houston will close out its regular season at home during the Cameron Burrell Invitational scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday next week, adjusting some events due to anticipated inclement weather.
