UTSA defeated the Rice Owls 8-0 on Friday night, April 3, evening their baseball series after a late-game surge at Reckling Park. Both starting pitchers, Ethan Sanders for Rice and Connor Myles for UTSA, kept the game close through six innings before UTSA broke out offensively in the final three frames.
The outcome is significant as it marks a strong response from UTSA following an earlier loss in the series. The Roadrunners’ offense came alive late in the game, scoring seven runs over the last three innings while holding Rice scoreless throughout.
Sanders allowed only five hits and one unearned run over his first six innings on the mound. Myles was dominant for UTSA, not allowing a hit until Cole Green opened the fourth inning with a bunt single that extended Green’s hitting streak to seven games. In the seventh inning, UTSA capitalized on two walks, two singles, and an error to score three runs. They added three more runs in the eighth and another in the ninth inning. The Owls did not get a runner to third base until late in the game.
Following this result, Rice’s record stands at 19-13 overall and 11-5 at home with a conference record of 4-4. The team has reached its nineteenth win faster than any season since achieving a similar mark in 2016 after just thirty-one games. Green is currently batting .444 during his seven-game hitting streak with twelve hits in twenty-seven at-bats. Colin Robson also extended his own hitting streak to six games.
Looking ahead, due to expected rain later Saturday afternoon, officials have moved up Saturday’s series finale between Rice and UTSA to noon. After wrapping up their eight-game homestand next Wednesday against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Rice will travel next weekend for three games against Charlotte.
