Mike Singletary was born on October 9, 1958, in Houston, Texas. He grew up in the city and attended Worthing High School. He later played college football at Baylor University. In 1981, he was drafted by the Chicago Bears. He played 12 seasons with the team. Singletary became known for his leadership and focus on defense. He earned 10 Pro Bowl selections and was twice named NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He helped lead the Bears to a Super Bowl win in the 1985 season. After retiring as a player, he worked as a coach, including serving as head coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998. Houston was central to his early life and development, where his discipline and work ethic first took shape.
