Texas Southern University defeated Alabama A&M 5–3 on Apr. 4 at Bulldog Field, improving its overall record to 14–12 and standing at 9–2 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.
The game saw Texas Southern take an early lead by scoring four runs in the first two innings. Byron Robinson started the scoring with an RBI single that brought home Christopher Chavez. The Tigers extended their advantage in the second inning, helped by RBI doubles from Nate Lopez and Robinson, along with two unearned runs following defensive errors by Alabama A&M.
Starting pitcher Jose Luccioni earned his second win of the season after pitching eight innings, allowing one earned run on ten hits and striking out three batters. He faced a total of thirty-three hitters and threw one hundred six pitches.
Alabama A&M responded with single runs in both the third and fourth innings through RBI hits from Miles Jackson and AJ Anderson but could not overcome Texas Southern’s lead. The Tigers added another run in the eighth when Chavez scored on a fielder’s choice by Evan Joubert. In the ninth inning, Anderson drove in another run for Alabama A&M with a sacrifice fly before Seve Medrano closed out the game for his first save of the season.
Chavez contributed two hits and scored three times for Texas Southern while Jonathan Trejo had three hits as well. Robinson led his team with two runs batted in, and Lopez reached base four times during the game.
The teams are scheduled to finish their weekend series on Saturday.
