Texas Southern University’s softball team won both games of a doubleheader against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on April 18, securing the series with determined play in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.
The victories are significant for Texas Southern as they continue their season and build momentum. The team showed resilience by coming from behind in both games and making key plays under pressure.
In the first game, Texas Southern overcame a late deficit to win 6-5. After trailing early, Karisma Garcia hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give her team the lead. Although Arkansas-Pine Bluff responded with a three-run homer of their own in the sixth, Texas Southern rallied in the seventh inning with timely hits from Destiny Menchaca, Jade McQueen, and Katelyn Cooper. The defense secured the win when Marisa Perla made a leaping catch and completed a double play to end the game. Kylie Wilson pitched a complete game and struck out six batters.
The second game saw more strong performances from Texas Southern players as they won 5-3. Garcia sparked the offense again with an early triple before McQueen drove her home. McQueen continued her standout performance throughout the game with another triple and a solo home run. Despite several rallies by Arkansas-Pine Bluff, including RBI singles from Shakaidria Hubbard and Janiah Wilson, Texas Southern’s defense held firm at crucial moments—ending with a double play to secure victory.
The series is set to conclude tomorrow at noon.
