Texas Southern softball completes sweep of Alcorn State with 10-1 win

Texas Southern softball secured a series sweep over Alcorn State with a 10-1 victory on Saturday afternoon, April 11.

The win highlights Texas Southern’s strong performance throughout the series and underscores their offensive and defensive strengths as they move forward in the season.

Alcorn State threatened to score early in the game, but Texas Southern closed out the first inning without allowing a run. The Tigers took control in the second inning by scoring four runs, starting with Jade McQueen’s solo home run to right-center. Dania Durr followed with an RBI double, Marisa Perla added another run-scoring double, and Kylie Wilson capped off the inning with an RBI single for a 4–0 lead. The offense continued into the third inning as McQueen hit an RBI single and Jordyn Talbert contributed a groundout that scored another run, extending the lead to 6–0. Destiny Menchaca drove in another run in the fourth on an RBI groundout.

In the fifth inning, Talbert, Katelynn Cooper, and Durr each drove in runs to increase Texas Southern’s advantage to 10–0. Alcorn State managed their only score when Adriyana Ruffin tripled to right field to bring home Jamyiyah Cotten.

McQueen led Texas Southern at bat by going three-for-three with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Durr also had two RBIs while Cooper and Talbert contributed key hits during the Tigers’ total of twelve hits. Pitcher Melonie Guardiola allowed just one run on three hits over five innings for Texas Southern while earning the win.

Texas Southern limited Alcorn State offensively throughout most of the game except for Ruffin’s triple. The team will play next at Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.
