Texas Southern defeated Grambling 12–1 on Mar. 29, powered by a standout performance from Justin Mays and four home runs at MacGregor Park.
The game was important for Texas Southern as they rebounded in their Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup, showing strength both offensively and defensively.
Mays struck out a career-high 12 batters over eight innings, allowing only two hits and one unearned run. The Tigers’ offense broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Evan Joubert hit a two-run home run, followed by Anthony Ruiz with another two-run shot to put Texas Southern ahead. In the sixth inning, patience at the plate paid off as the team drew four walks and collected RBI singles from Jonathan Trejo and Byron Robinson to extend their lead.
The eighth inning saw Texas Southern add four more runs. Trejo delivered an RBI single before Robinson hit a three-run homer to right field. Robinson finished with four RBIs while Trejo went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Joubert and Ruiz each drove in two runs as well, contributing to the team’s total of nine hits and eight walks.
Grambling managed its only run in the second inning on an RBI single by Chris Marcellus but struggled against Mays for most of the afternoon. The Texas Southern pitching staff limited Grambling to just two hits during the game.
With this win, Texas Southern demonstrated strong pitching depth and offensive production as they continue their season.
