Texas Southern defeats Alcorn State 12–5 with early scoring surge

Texas Southern defeated Alcorn State 12–5 on Apr. 12 at Bobcat Field, after building a large lead in the first three innings of play.

The result highlights Texas Southern’s strong start to the game, which set the tone for their win and gave them an advantage they maintained throughout.

The Tigers scored five runs in the opening inning and added seven more over the next two frames, taking a commanding 12–0 lead after three innings. The team finished with 15 hits, including multi-hit games from Anthony Ruiz, Jonathan Trejo, and Byron Robinson. Trejo went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, including a solo home run in the second inning. Robinson hit a three-run homer as part of his four-RBI performance. Ruiz contributed three hits, drove in two runs, and scored twice for Texas Southern. Miguel Morales also had two hits and an RBI.

During a six-run third inning, Texas Southern sent eleven batters to the plate to extend their lead into double digits. Nate Lopez singled home a run before Ruiz cleared the bases with an RBI triple; Trejo, Robinson, and Morales followed with consecutive RBI singles to finish off the rally.

Jose Luccioni earned the win for Texas Southern by pitching five innings while allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven batters. The bullpen provided four innings of relief work as Alcorn State managed only three more runs before being held scoreless late in the game.

Alcorn State got on board when Asher Friedman singled home a run in the fourth inning; Kanious Davis added a solo homer in the fifth; Christian Dunn hit a three-run homer in the sixth that brought Alcorn within seven runs but could not close further. Kayden Sutton took the loss for Alcorn State after giving up twelve runs on fourteen hits across just under three innings pitched.

Texas Southern played error-free defense and struck out twelve opposing batters during this series opener.
