Texas Southern and Southern University each won a game during their softball doubleheader at Memorial Park on April 4.

The matchup saw Texas Southern take the first game with a narrow 1-0 victory, while Southern University responded by winning the second game 7-5. The results leave both teams with one win apiece heading into the final game of the series.

In the opener, Zaria Turner led Texas Southern by pitching a three-hit shutout. Chiara Pryor scored the only run of the contest after doubling in the fifth inning and advancing home on Jade McQueen’s bunt. Turner struck out seven batters and kept Southern from scoring, including key outs in late innings to secure the win for Texas Southern.

Southern responded strongly in game two, jumping ahead early with a three-run home run in the first inning and adding three more runs in the second for a 6-0 lead. Texas Southern narrowed the gap thanks to RBI plays from Kylie Wilson and others but could not complete their comeback despite loading the bases late in the seventh inning. Wilson contributed both offensively—going two-for-three with two runs batted in—and as pitcher throughout all seven innings.

The doubleheader sets up an important final meeting between these teams, scheduled for Saturday morning at Memorial Park.
