Texas Senate bill by Sen. Alvarado mandates enhanced fire safety inspections at schools

Newly passed bill authored by State Sen. Carol Alvarado aims to strengthen fire safety at public and private schools by requiring inspections of defibrillators and medication expiration during fire safety checks, according to the Texas Legislature website.

In the Senate, 11 Democrats and 20 Republicans voted in favor of the bill, with no opposition.

Meanwhile, in the House, 43 Democrats and 65 Republicans voted in favor, also with no opposing votes.

Carol Alvarado introduced the bill in the Texas Senate on Friday, Feb. 7, during the 89th regular legislative session.

Alvarado graduated from the University of Houston with a BA.

Alvarado, a Democrat, was elected to the Texas State Senate in 2018 to represent the state’s 6th Senate district, replacing previous state senator Sylvia Garcia.

The bill received its final legislative approval on Friday, May 16, and was signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday, May 29.
