Rep. Sylvia Garcia, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 29th district, has recently shared her views on several key issues through social media posts. Having replaced Gene Green in 2019, Garcia continues to advocate for various policies and initiatives.
On May 12, 2025, Rep. Garcia expressed her support for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) by signing a second amicus brief aimed at defending the bureau against attempts by former President Trump to dismantle it. She stated, “Proud to sign on to a second amicus brief defending the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as Trump tries to dismantle it to protect predatory lenders and silence watchdogs. Congress created the CFPB, and only Congress can eliminate it. The Constitution makes that clear.”
Later that day, she addressed concerns regarding proposed Republican Medicaid cuts, highlighting their potential impact on vulnerable populations including children and people with disabilities. She emphasized her commitment to opposing these cuts by stating: “Republican Medicaid cuts will hurt the most vulnerable, children, people with disabilities, and families just trying to get by. Millions of people will lose their healthcare. We’re not going to let that happen. We will fight back and protect Medicaid.”
On May 13, 2025, during National Police Week, Rep. Garcia paid tribute to law enforcement officers who have served their communities bravely. In remembrance of four heroes being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial she noted: “This week, during #NationalPoliceWeek, we remember and honor the brave members of our law enforcement community and their service.” She specifically mentioned Officer Ronald W. Bates as one of those being honored.
Sylvia Garcia was born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and resides in Houston. A graduate of Texas Woman’s University with a BA in 1972 and a JD from Texas Southern University.
