Rep. Sylvia Garcia, U.S. Congresswoman representing Texas’ 29th district since 2019, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing both local and national issues, including Houston’s preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup and her criticisms of Republican legislative actions in Texas and Washington.
On July 15, 2025, Garcia highlighted Houston’s role as a host city for the global sporting event: “We’re less than a year away from the @FIFAWorldCup, and @HoustonTX is ready to shine as one of the host cities! Can’t wait to welcome the world to our city and celebrate the beautiful game. Let’s play some fútbol, Houston! #FIFAWorldCup”.
The following day, she criticized Republican leaders for their approach during an emergency legislative session: “President Trump and Gov. Abbott are plotting to silence your vote to make sure they don’t lose power. Instead of focusing on infrastructure needs in the Hill Country, Republicans are using this emergency session to play politics and rig congressional maps. Texans deserve fair” (July 16, 2025).
Later that same day, Garcia commented on proposed cryptocurrency legislation: “Republicans are ramming through the CALAMITY and UNSTABLE Acts to help Trump cash in on crypto. These aren’t crypto regulation bills — they’re corruption bills filled with loopholes, scams. These bills let the felon in the White House continue making a profit while working” (July 16, 2025).
Garcia has served in Congress since succeeding Gene Green in 2019 after previously serving in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950, she is currently based in Houston.
She holds degrees from Texas Woman’s University (BA) and Texas Southern University (JD).
