U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia, who serves Texas’s 29th congressional district, addressed several policy issues in a series of tweets posted on February 9 and 10, 2026. Garcia, a member of the U.S. Congress since 2019 and former Texas state senator, commented on immigration enforcement under former President Donald Trump, the impact of tariffs on families in her district, and her support for local higher education initiatives.

On February 9, Garcia criticized former President Trump’s claims regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrests during his administration. She wrote: “Trump said he’d go after the ‘worst of the worst.’ It was a boldfaced lie. Less than 14% of ICE arrests under Trump are violent criminals.”

Later that day, Garcia discussed economic concerns facing residents in her district due to federal policies enacted during Trump’s presidency. She stated: “Families in TX-29 will be forced to pay $1,980 more this year because of Trump’s tariffs and the Big Ugly Law. I’m fighting back.”

On February 10, Garcia shifted focus to educational opportunities within her district by highlighting a meeting with Houston Community College officials in Washington D.C.: “Today I met with @HOUCityCollege in DC to discuss the exciting programs they’re offering students in neighborhoods across the Greater Houston area, including their new four-year degree programs. I’m proud to support the important work HCC is doing and the future they are”

Garcia has consistently secured electoral victories representing Texas’s 29th District since succeeding Gene Green in Congress following his retirement in 2019. Her recent election wins include defeating Alan Garza with over 65% of the vote in 2024 as well as prior victories against Robert Schafranek (2022), Jaimy Blanco (2020), and Phillip Aronoff (2018). Before serving at the federal level, she represented constituents as a member of the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018.
