Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 29th district, has recently taken to social media to express her concerns regarding the Republican budget plan and its implications for vulnerable populations in America.
On May 21, 2025, Rep. Garcia highlighted findings from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office in a tweet. She stated that “the Republican budget plan makes the poorest Americans pay for the tax cuts of the richest.” She emphasized that these numbers translate into real-world consequences such as “kids starving” and “people with disabilities losing healthcare.”
Later that day, Rep. Garcia criticized proposals by Trump and House Republicans concerning nutritional assistance programs. In her tweet, she asserted that “Trump and House Republicans want to gut SNAP,” which would leave “42 million people without access to nutritional assistance.” She argued this move prioritizes tax breaks for billionaires over essential support for millions of hungry children.
In another post on May 22, 2025, Rep. Garcia addressed further developments in legislative proposals by House Republicans. She noted that their bill would result in increased health premiums and expedited removal from Medicaid coverage. Her tweet indicated that “this translates to millions of people losing their healthcare,” affecting children, seniors, and adults with disabilities.
Sylvia Garcia has served in Congress since 2019 after replacing Gene Green. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950, she currently resides in Houston.
