U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia, who represents Texas’ 29th district in Congress, used her social media platform to criticize recent actions by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and former President Donald Trump regarding the state’s congressional maps.
On July 18, 2025, Garcia posted: “Governor Abbott and Donald Trump are trying to redraw Texas’ congressional maps mid-decade—not to ensure fair representation, but to cling to power. Their ideas are unpopular, so they’re rigging the rules. Texans are watching, and we won’t be silenced.”
Three days later, on July 21, 2025, she continued her criticism with another post: “Texas Republicans just gaveled in a special session—not to govern, but to gerrymander. Why? Because Trump’s agenda is wildly unpopular, and they know it. If they can’t win on ideas, they’ll cheat on the congressional maps. We will fight this every step of the way.” On the same day, Garcia tagged House Democrats and House Democratic Policy and Communications Committee in a brief post: @HouseDemocrats @HouseDPCC
Garcia has represented Texas’s 29th District in Congress since 2019 after succeeding Gene Green. She previously served in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and currently residing in Houston at age 72, Garcia holds degrees from Texas Woman’s University (BA) and Texas Southern University (JD).
Her comments come amid heightened debate over redistricting practices in Texas. Redrawing congressional maps outside of the usual post-census process has historically been controversial due to concerns about gerrymandering—manipulating district boundaries for political advantage.
