Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a U.S. Congress member representing Texas’ 29th district, has expressed her concerns over recent legislative developments regarding food assistance and healthcare. On May 22, 2025, she took to social media to voice her opposition to the actions taken by House Republicans.
In a tweet posted at 05:00:48 UTC, Garcia stated, “We’re burning the midnight oil because the fight is worth it. House Republicans are pushing the largest cut to food assistance in U.S. history, ripping away SNAP and school meals from millions of people, including children and seniors.” She emphasized the urgency of opposing these cuts.
Later that day at 10:57:52 UTC, Garcia criticized Republican lawmakers for their decisions regarding healthcare and food assistance programs. She wrote, “Republicans are cheering that they voted to take away healthcare and food from children, seniors, and working families.”
At 11:53:22 UTC on the same day, Garcia provided further details about her stance through a statement linked in another tweet. She announced “My full statement on passage of the House Republican budget and reconciliation package.”
Garcia has served in Congress since 2019 after replacing Gene Green. Before her congressional tenure, she was a member of the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and currently residing in Houston, she holds degrees from Texas Woman’s University and Texas Southern University.
