U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia, a Democrat from Texas, voiced opposition to Republican-led redistricting efforts in Arlington on July 29, 2025. In a series of posts on her official Twitter account, Garcia criticized the process and encouraged public participation.
On July 29, Garcia stated, “I spoke out in Arlington today against Republican gerrymandering because Texans will never let a con man from New York tell them what to do. Trump wants to rig the congressional maps to steal five more House seats — and Texas Republicans are holding hearings with no maps, no”. She referred directly to former President Donald Trump and alleged that the current redistricting efforts were intended to benefit Republicans in upcoming elections.
Later that day, Garcia invited constituents to participate in the legislative process by submitting comments online. She posted, “The public is welcome to submit comments online for the record: Texas Senate: https://t.co/xhrI5YlBvg Texas House: https://t.co/g4ND5mGMmJ”.
In another message on July 29, she expressed solidarity with fellow lawmakers opposing the redistricting plan: “Proud to stand with my colleagues in Arlington today to speak out against this sham redistricting scheme. Texans see through it and we’re not backing down. #txlege”.
Redistricting has been a contentious issue in Texas politics for decades, often resulting in legal challenges and accusations of partisan gerrymandering. Public input is typically solicited during these processes through hearings or written comments submitted online.
Garcia has consistently secured reelection since first winning her seat in 2018. In the most recent general election of 2024, she defeated Alan Garza by a margin of 65.3% to 34.7%. Previous victories include defeating Robert Schafranek (71.4%–28.5%) in 2022; Jaimy Blanco (71.1%–27.4%) in 2020; and Phillip Aronoff (75.1%–23.9%) in 2018.
