Rep. Sylvia Garcia, a U.S. Congress member representing Texas’ 29th district since 2019, has been vocal on social media about her opposition to recent legislative actions by Congressional Republicans. On July 3, 2025, she expressed her stance through a series of tweets.
In her first tweet of the day, Garcia criticized the Republican-backed legislation known as the “#BigUglyBill.” She stated that “.@HouseDemocrats are united against Trump’s #BigUglyBill, which will gut Medicaid and SNAP for millions of Americans.” She further condemned Congressional Republicans for advancing the bill at the expense of vulnerable groups such as working families, seniors, veterans, and children.
Later that day, Garcia voiced her support for fellow Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries. She tweeted that she was “Proud to have @RepJeffries’ back as he speaks truth on the House floor.” Garcia emphasized their collective effort to prevent Republicans from removing health care and SNAP benefits from millions of Americans.
In a subsequent tweet posted in the afternoon, Garcia highlighted her commitment to opposing the bill by sharing an image of herself in what appeared to be an all-night session at Congress. She affirmed their dedication by saying “Yes, that’s me. Yes, same outfit. Yes, we’ve been up all night fighting to protect your health care.” She encouraged constituents to share their stories with her team.
Garcia’s political career began in the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018 before she succeeded Gene Green in Congress. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and currently residing in Houston, she holds degrees from Texas Woman’s University and Texas Southern University.
