U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia, a Democratic member of Congress, recently used her social media platform to address several pressing issues, including calls for the resignation or impeachment of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, criticism of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), concerns over the detention of migrant children, and recognition of Black History Month.

On January 30, 2026, Garcia posted: “Kristi Noem must resign or we will impeach her. ICE has operated without proper oversight, terrorizing communities and ripping families apart. We should not be sending one more dollar to an agency that harms our neighbors.” The tweet was directed at fellow Democrats and members of the Hispanic Caucus.

Two days later, on February 1, 2026, Garcia commented on the detention of a young child: “When our government detains a five-year-old, something is deeply broken. I believe no child should ever be treated this way. Liam should never have been held in custody, and I’m relieved he and his father are finally home.”

On February 2, 2026, she marked Black History Month by stating: “Black history is American history. This month and every month, we honor the contributions of Black Americans and reflect on the resilient history that defines our nation. #BHM”

Garcia’s statements come amid ongoing debates about immigration enforcement practices in the United States as well as broader discussions around racial justice and historical recognition. Sylvia Garcia has maintained a strong presence in Texas politics; she won re-election to Congress in multiple cycles with significant margins—defeating Alan Garza in 2024 with over 65% of the vote; Robert Schafranek in 2022 with more than 71%; Jaimy Blanco in 2020 with just over 71%; and Phillip Aronoff in 2018 with more than three-quarters of the vote.
