Rep. Sylvia Garcia, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 29th district, shared her views on several significant issues through a series of tweets on July 9, 2025.
In her first tweet, Garcia emphasized the importance of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for individuals who cannot return to their home countries due to war, natural disasters, or other severe circumstances. She stated that TPS allows these individuals to remain safe and contribute to America. Garcia asserted, “Sending people back to violence, dictatorship, and chaos is un-American. We must protect these families.”
Later that day, she engaged with several organizations by tagging them in a tweet: @TPS_Alliance @WeAreUnidosUS @FWDus @NILC @CASAforall @CHIRLA. This engagement suggests her support for groups advocating for immigrant rights and protections.
Garcia also commemorated the ratification of the 14th Amendment on July 9 by highlighting its significance in guaranteeing equal protection under the law and affirming birthright citizenship. She criticized former President Trump’s efforts to end birthright citizenship as “reckless, unjust, and flat-out unconstitutional.”
Sylvia Garcia has served in Congress since 2019 after replacing Gene Green. Prior to this role, she was a member of the Texas Senate from 2013 to 2018. Born in San Diego, Texas in 1950 and now residing in Houston, Garcia graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a BA and earned a JD from Texas Southern University.
