Mayor John Whitmire joined Chief Troy Finner today to congratulate and thank the newest graduates of the Houston Police Department Academy. HPD's cadet class #261 consists of 76 men and women prepared to serve and protect Houstonians from day one.

"Today is not my first time attending a cadet graduation, but it is my first as mayor, and I could not be prouder. I can't think of a better place for the Mayor of Houston to be right this minute than at this graduation," said Mayor Whitmire.

The mayor recognized the cadets' courage and dedication to the city while speaking in front of an audience that included the cadets' loved ones and city council members.

"On behalf of all Houstonians, I stand before you and say thank you. I'm also going to ask you to help us recruit additional officers," said the mayor.

HPD offers a $10,000 incentive for incoming cadets. Anyone interested in learning more may visit the HPD career page. for information on benefits and requirements to join the department.

"Houstonians want a safe city. We have a great city and great people, and we will address public safety. It is my highest priority," said the mayor. "Cadets, I have an open-door policy, and when you run into issues on the job or in your personal life, I am your friend and mayor. With that said, "Let's go to work."
