On August 21, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) held a press conference to highlight $2,500,000 in federal funding to replace approximately 2,400 linear feet of pre-1939 cast iron potable water distribution lines, which have exceeded their lifespan.

The waterlines, which are located on Milton Street, serve as a main artery from the City’s pump station that feeds its overall water distribution system.  These much-needed improvements will have a real impact on the residents of West University Place by pre-empting significant repair costs as well as water supply disruption.

“Access to clean drinking water is critical to our community’s health and economy,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher.  “I am proud to announce that the City of West University Place will receive $2.5 million in federal funding that I requested, advocated for, and obtained through congressional appropriations to replace nearly 100-year-old water distribution lines.  I was glad to collaborate with Mayor Sample to support this important work, and I look forward to continuing to work together with our residents and West University leaders.”

“The Milton Street Water Line Replacement Project will mark off yet another infrastructure project in the City’s Foundation for the Future plan,” said Mayor Susan Sample. “The collaborative effort to fund this project with Congresswoman Fletcher’s office is a testament to our dedication to modernizing the City’s infrastructure to meet the demands of the present and future.”

Last year, Congresswoman Fletcher requested funding specifically for the City of West University Place waterline replacement through the community project funding process in Congress.  The process allows members of Congress to request funding for specific projects in their districts.  She secured the funding through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, the bipartisan government funding bill that funds essential programs and projects—including the Milton Street waterline replacement—for Fiscal Year 2023.
