Washington, DC – On August 17, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia applauds the legal victory of a Texas woman against cyber exploitation and the malicious spread of intimate images.
The woman has been awarded $1.2 billion in a ‘revenge porn’ lawsuit under the Relationship Privacy Act. This historic ruling not only serves as a win for the victim but also marks a significant turning point in the fight against online harassment, invasions of privacy, and digital violation of human rights.
“When I authored the Relationship Privacy Act during my time in the Texas State Senate, my goal was to halt the alarming trend of nonconsensual disclosure of sexually explicit images online,” said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. “The act of sharing nude or sexually explicit photographs on the internet without an individual’s consent represents evil and destruction and is the ultimate breach of trust. As the years have passed, this law continues establishing vital precedents, ensuring that justice is served for the victims who have endured unimaginable harm.”
