As befitting a city that has been designated a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, the City of Houston planted 1,000 trees as part of its 35th Annual Arbor Day Planting Ceremony.

The ceremony took place in the South Acres/Crestmont Park community. Apache Corporation played a significant role in the planting, donating 100,000 trees to the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and its Urban Forestry programs, the city reported in a press release. The current planting will help alleviate flooding concerns and reduce mowing time while increasing the city’s tree canopy.

“One of the things I love most about Houston is its amazing canopy of beautiful trees. It is why Arbor Day is always a special occasion for me, and to everyone in the city,” Mayor Sylvester Turner said. “More trees mean better health and more attractive communities for every Houstonian. Plus, research has shown that improving a city’s tree canopy can help fight climate change, clean our air, help clean drinking water, cool surface and air temperatures, along with improving our health.”

Houston observes Arbor Day in January as it provides the best time period for planting trees.
