HOUSTON – State Sen. Paul Bettencourt (R-Houston) became the first recipient of the Texas Public Policy Foundation’s (TTPF) Legislative Legacy Award during an awards dinner late last month.

TTPF awarded Bettencourt on Jan. 23 for his numerous actions over the course of his latest term. Last year, Bettencourt passed the Texas Property Tax Reform and Transparency Act of 2019 that provides relief and reforms to all state taxpayers. It's the first major property tax reform legislation in Texas in nearly 40 years. His sponsoring of House Bill 3148 allows more adults access to stem cell opportunities and restricts government control on the treatments.

Bettencourt dedicated a portion of his acceptance speech by commending Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick for removing the “blocker bill” that allowed state property tax reform to occur.

“Now I have all my life fought to control the road to government because the only way we can stop our tax bills from going through the roof is to control the road to government,” Bettencourt said in his speech.

State Rep. James Frank (R-Knox) won the same award for his service in the Texas House of Representatives.

“We truly do serve in a 'Company of Heroes' in the Texas Legislature,” Bettencourt said in a Facebook post. “I am looking forward to future winners continuing to find conservative solutions to Texas' challenges.”
