BEAUMONT – Drivers in Southeastern Texas have most likely already spotted the new billboards established near the roads that aim to bring more awareness about human trafficking and child exploitation that occurs throughout the state.
Global anti-human trafficking organization A21 collaborated with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office and others to place the billboards as part of the #CanYouSeeMe awareness campaign. The campaign came together on Nov. 17 in Jefferson County for an official launch.
“As you drive around Southeast Texas, you may notice a new series of billboards aimed at bringing awareness to human trafficking and child exploitation,” the DA’s office said in a Facebook post. The billboards depict scenarios that reflect some of the most common forms of human trafficking, and they will be displayed statewide over the next year.
According to the latest data from the National Human Trafficking Hotline, 1,000 human trafficking cases were reported in Texas in 2018, the second highest in the U.S. behind California.
