A human trafficking summit not only went as far as uncovering the issue of the crime in Texas, but also provided options to help put a stop to it for good, according to the Harris County Department of Education News Blog.
Former U.S. Rep Ted Poe, a guest at the event hosted by Children at Risk and the Center for Safe and Secure Schools, spoke on his passion about ending human trafficking. Love People Not Pixels and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for Sex Crimes and Trafficking also made presentations.
Sandy Storm, a human trafficking survivor, opened up about her experience. She said she had already suffered human trafficking before she realized the awareness of it. Her past included being raised by a single mom who was close with a successful businessman who took advantage of both Storm and her mother. Storm now spreads awareness through speaking engagements and her new book.
Attorney Jamie Caruthers, who represents Children at Risk, said one of the solutions is for educators to be on the lookout for any suspicious activities with their students, whether it’s a major alteration in their behavior, such as openly discussing sexual experiences (more than the age-appropriate norm), or even things such as tattoos or indications of physical abuse.
