Senator John Cornyn, a longtime Republican U.S. Senator from Texas, used his social media account on August 4, 2025, to revisit the events of 2021 when Texas House Democrats left the state during a legislative standoff.
In his first post, Cornyn wrote: “Let’s take a walk down memory lane and revisit 2021, the last time Texas House Democrats fled the state, a $1.5 million journey complete with private jets and at least one case of Miller Lite #txlege https://t.co/jckyn5nvrZ” (August 4, 2025).
He continued in a follow-up tweet: “But wait, there’s more:
This ridiculous post from another one of the fleeing democrats is still up.
https://t.co/Ol64D5dDNC” (August 4, 2025).
In another message posted moments later, Cornyn referenced State Representative Gene Wu: “Rep. Gene Wu claimed this was “a serious sacrifice for many members.” Then he tweeted… whatever this is:
https://t.co/wklZsOQLqf” (August 4, 2025).
The incident Cornyn referenced occurred in July 2021 when Democratic members of the Texas House left the state to block passage of voting legislation by denying quorum. The lawmakers traveled to Washington D.C., drawing national attention and debate over legislative tactics and voting rights.
Senator John Cornyn has held his seat since first winning election in 2002. He has been re-elected several times with varying margins: defeating Ron Kirk in 2002 with about 55% of the vote; Rick Noriega in 2008 with nearly 55%; David Alameel in 2014 with over 61%; and MJ Hegar in 2020 with approximately 53.5%.
