Senator John Cornyn criticized Texas House Democrats in a series of tweets on August 4, 2025, focusing on their past actions during legislative quorum breaks and the associated expenses.
In one tweet, Cornyn referenced an earlier incident involving Democratic lawmakers: “And don’t forget when TX House Dems requested ‘care packages’ for abandoning their constituents and refusing to show up for work.” (August 4, 2025).
He also posted a link without further comment: “https://t.co/W1pVYT8nSI” (August 4, 2025).
Addressing the costs incurred during previous quorum breaks, Cornyn wrote: “More than $100k for a pair of private jets at the time was just a drop in the bucket of this PR junket, which one Democrat estimated would cost $1.5 million. How much of a ‘sacrifice’ will this year’s quorum break vacation be on Texas House Dems? Stay tuned!” (August 4, 2025).
John Cornyn has served as U.S. Senator from Texas since first winning election in 2002. He has won re-election multiple times, defeating Ron Kirk in 2002 with 55% of the vote to Kirk’s 43%, Rick Noriega in 2008 with 54.8% to Noriega’s 42.8%, David Alameel in 2014 with 61.6% to Alameel’s 34.3%, and MJ Hegar in 2020 with 53.5% to Hegar’s 43.9%.
