Senator John Cornyn, who has represented Texas in the U.S. Senate since 2002, addressed concerns about healthcare spending and Senate deliberations in a series of posts on September 4, 2025.

In his first post, Cornyn highlighted the nation’s healthcare expenditures and outcomes: “The U.S. spends approximately 18% of our GDP on healthcare, yet we rank roughly 10th among developed nations in terms of healthcare outcome. Democrats seem to think the more money we spend, the more we’re going to improve those outcomes.” (September 4, 2025).

Later that day, Cornyn described questioning Secretary Kennedy during a Senate hearing about approaches to improving healthcare results. He quoted Kennedy’s response: “I asked @SecKennedy: what he is going to do to address this & why is throwing money at the problem ineffective?   @SecKennedy: ‘…throwing money at the problem does not work.'” (September 4, 2025).

Cornyn also commented on the conduct of a Senate Finance Committee hearing, criticizing Democratic members for their tactics. He wrote: “The Senate is often called ‘the world’s greatest deliberative body,’ but you wouldn’t have known that from the hearing today. There were misleading allegations made against @SecKennedy by Democrats in today’s @SenFinance hearing that were solely designed to provoke fear.” (September 4, 2025).

Cornyn has maintained his seat through multiple election cycles, defeating Democratic challengers MJ Hegar in 2020 with 53.5% of the vote, David Alameel in 2014 with 61.6%, Rick Noriega in 2008 with 54.8%, and Ron Kirk in 2002 with 55%. These electoral victories underscore his longstanding role as a Republican voice from Texas.
