Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, recently posted a series of tweets highlighting legislative activity and law enforcement experiences at the U.S.-Mexico border.
On July 28, 2025, Cornyn shared information about new legislation he introduced: “Senator John Cornyn, Republican of Texas, introduced legislation that would provide $300 million to construct a facility to breed and sterilize flies, but the House has left Washington for the summer.” The tweet underscores that despite his legislative efforts, progress may be delayed due to the House’s recess.
Later that day, Cornyn drew attention to Victor Avila’s background in border security and law enforcement. At 16:53 UTC, he tweeted: “ICYMI: Victor Avila is a retired ICE Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent who served on our border with Mexico and as accredited diplomat to Mexico, Spain, and Portugal. He knows all too well the price our law enforcement officers pay just to do their jobs.”
In a subsequent tweet at nearly the same time, Cornyn described an incident involving Avila and his partner: “He & his partner, Special Agent Jaime Zapata, were shot by gang members while on duty. Victor was seriously wounded, and his partner lost his life. I appreciate his willingness to share his testimony during our Judiciary hearing last week. We are forever grateful to Victor for”
Cornyn has represented Texas in the U.S. Senate since 2002. He has secured re-election multiple times—including victories over MJ Hegar in 2020 with 53.5% of the vote compared to Hegar’s 43.9%, David Alameel in 2014 with 61.6% versus Alameel’s 34.3%, Rick Noriega in 2008 with 54.8% against Noriega’s 42.8%, and Ron Kirk in 2002 with 55% over Kirk’s 43%.
