U.S. Senator John Cornyn of Texas addressed the Senate floor today, emphasizing the importance of tackling the national debt in President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. He highlighted key priorities for the legislation, such as extending Trump-era tax cuts and implementing work requirements for means-tested programs.
Cornyn stressed the urgency of addressing fiscal issues, stating, “One of the most important things that we need to do in this budget reconciliation process is to finally come to grips with our national debt.” He pointed out that interest payments on the national debt now exceed defense spending, which he described as “the number one job of the federal government.”
The senator expressed concern about maintaining U.S. global standing and defense capabilities: “If we want the United States to maintain its standing in the world…we have to at least begin to get our fiscal house in order.”
Cornyn praised aspects of the House bill, particularly its inclusion of work requirements set for 2026. He hopes similar policies will be part of the Senate’s version.
Highlighting potential consequences if tax cuts are not extended, Cornyn warned: “Failure is not an option. If the President’s tax cuts are not extended, the American people will face the largest tax increase in American history… back home in Texas, my constituents will see their taxes increase on average $3,000 next year.”
He shared feedback from his constituents during a recent recess: “My constituents have emphasized…how much they are depending on these tax cuts being renewed,” noting their importance for small businesses.
Cornyn concluded by underscoring public expectations: “The American people are depending on us to pass the President’s agenda through this One Big Beautiful Bill.”
