U.S. Senator John Cornyn has issued a statement regarding the border security funding included in the Senate Judiciary Committee’s legislative text for the Senate’s version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The statement emphasizes reversing what Cornyn describes as a crisis at the southern border and aims to restore law and order.
Cornyn stated, “The Senate’s One Big Beautiful Bill will reverse Biden’s disastrous, manmade crisis at our southern border and restore law and order, along with reimbursing Texas for costs incurred from Operation Lone Star due to the Biden administration’s dereliction of duty.” He added that the legislation would fulfill promises made by former President Trump, ensuring secure borders and prioritizing American communities.
The legislative text includes several provisions for border security funding:
– Nearly $30 billion is allocated to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for hiring, retention, recruitment, training, fleet modernization, and support for the Victims Of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) Office.
– $750 million is designated for Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers to enhance collaboration among federal, state, local law enforcement officers, and international partners. This includes $465 million for facility upgrades and $285 million to support new personnel training under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
– More than $3 billion is directed to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to back The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program and Office of Community Oriented Policing (COPS), both supported by Cornyn.
– A total of $13.5 billion is earmarked to reimburse states like Texas for border security expenses incurred due to what Cornyn refers to as “former Pres. Biden’s dereliction of duty,” combining $3.5 billion from this bill with an additional $10 billion from other legislative texts.
